Biography

William Whitman is a proven direct descendant of John & Priscilla (Mullins) Alden of the Mayflower as follows: William Whitman-5, Jemima-4 Alden, Isaac-3 Alden, Joseph-2 Alden, John-1 Alden.[1]

William Whitman was born at Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts on 21 May 1740. He was the son of Deacon Thomas Whitman & his wife Jemima Alden.[2][3][4][5]

William Whitman married first on 26 May 1761, at East Parish of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Mary Studley, [6][7][8]

William & Mary Studley had the following children all baptized at East Bridgewater, Massachusetts: Polle, bp. 27 June 1762, William, bp. 30 Oct 1763, Lucy, bp. 11 Oct 1767, Oakes, b. 1769, Chloe, bp. 28 Nov. 1773, & Luther bp. 23 Feb. 1777.[9]

William's wife, Mary (Studley) Whitman, died at East Bridgewater, Massachusetts on 5 March 1777.[10][11]

William Whitman married for his 2nd wife, Content (Norris) Cole, on 7 Jan 1779 at Pembroke, Plymouth, Massachusetts.[12]

William Whitman died probably at Pembroke, Plymouth, Massachusetts between 7 Jan 1791 & 2 Oct 1797.[13][14]

Probate

William Whitman of Pembroke, yeoman died intestate and on 2 October 1797, Oakes Whitman of Pembroke was granted the administration of his estate.[15]

His inventory was taken on 7 October 1797 in Pembroke. His estate was represented as insolvent. A list of claims and creditors was recorded. An account of his estate by Oakes Whitman was recorded which included, appraisers, digging the grave, doctor, coffin, personal estate allowed the widow, and administration fees. A second account was recorded which included the sale of real estate, balance from the prior account, taxes, repairing the real estate, and administration fees. The balance was proportioned to pay the creditors.[16]
