Biography

Harley was born 20 May 1898 in Davilla, Milam, Texas to parents Edith Pamelia Katherine Holden and James William York. He was raised in a farm family of five children, of which he was the second.

At the age of 19, Harley met and fell in love with Mattie Carruth. They were married 10 Dec 1917 in Celina, Collin, Texas, the hometown of Mattie.

Harley and Mattie were the parents of nine children. The first, a little girl named Lillie Ruth, was born in Jacksonville, Cherokee, Texas, three days after their first anniversary. Sadly, she died at a year and a half, 20 June 1920.

The couple moved shortly afterward to Bonham, Fannin, Texas, where Mattie's parents were living. In September of that same year, only three months after the loss of Lillie Ruth, Mattie gave birth to twin boys, Harley and Harlen. Sadder still, those two little boys quietly died the same day they were born.

Work took the couple a few counties west, to Paducah, Cottle, Texas. There, on 3 Jan 1922, Mattie gave birth to the first of their children who would survive to adulthood, William Phelps York, known as Bill.

Then two years and six days later, another set of twins, Preston Charles and Presley George, were born weighing a mere eight and one-half pounds together on the cotton scales. They were known thereafter in their family as "Big Boy" and "Little Boy", as Preston outweighed Presley by a whopping half a pound. As tiny as they were, they survived and lived long lives.

Just thirteen and a half months later, Felix Leroy joined his three brothers.

About 1926, the family moved to Cameron, Milam, Texas, near where Harley had been born and where his parents and two youngest brothers lived. The following May, another daughter was born, Emma Lou. They did not remain there for too long, however, work, becoming harder and harder to come by, taking them next to Wichita Falls, Wichita, Texas.

It was in Wichita Falls, in November of 1929, that their last child, Albert, was born.

By the following spring, they had gone a few counties north to Cotton County, Oklahoma. They did not remain there for too long, however. By 1935, they were in Baylor County, Texas, and soon after, were living near Bowie, Montague, Texas. They would remain their until after the war.

In the mid-1940's, they would move again, one last time, to Brownfield, Terry, County. In 1967, among many family members and friends, they celebrated 50 years together .

Finally able to settle in one place, they remained there until Harley passed away in 1971 and Mattie in 1975.
