John Merriam was born 26 Jun 1752 Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut, He is the son of Jesse Merriam and Mary[1].
Soldier in revolutionary war. In 1775 the "Lexington Alarm" was heard in Meridian, and both John Merriam and Phineas Hough answered the call.[2] They were part of the 4000 men from Connecticut who answered the call to go to the aid of Lexington at the start of the revolutionary war. However, the men returned home after 6 days since the battle had ended before they arrived.
John Merriman married Hulda (Royce) Hough in 1777,[3] the widow of Phineas Hough. Phineas Hough Jr. at age 31 yrs. died while serving in the military during the American Revolution on August 01 ,1776. John Merriam was a close friend of the Hough family.
John and Huldah had 3 children:
Hulda Royce Hough Merriam died in July 06,1786. Her estate was left to her children from her marrage to Phineas Hough. After she died John married Susannah Johnson, widow of Justus Johnson. They had 3 children, born in Meridian:
In 1792 John moved his family to Percy, Canada because he did not like the new government in the USA. He moved with his brother,James and their families. He passed away in 1802. [5]
