Biography
George Kershaw was born in Hertfordshire, England.
George Kershaw was born about 1800. He was the son of Jonas Kershaw and Charlotte Falwood. George was baptised on 7th September 1800 at St Mary in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. [1]
On 17th December 1821, George married Elizabeth Watkins. The marriage took place in St Botolph in Bishopsgate, London. [2]
His first wife died less than three years later.
On 28th April 1828, George married Sarah Freeman. The marriage took place in Spitalfields, Christ Church, Stepney, Middlesex. [3]
In 1851, George was residing with his wife Sarah and his daughter, Lucretia, in Islington, Middlesex. George was working manufacturing fancy stationery. [4]
In 1871, George was seen on the census as a retired ivory worker (it's possible he was crafting letter openers previously). In the household was his daughter-in-law, three grand daughters and two grandsons. There were also two visitors and a servant. George was still in Islington, Middlesex. [5]
George passed away in 1872. His death was registered in Islington. [6]
Research Note
It is highly unlikely this George Kershaw married Mary Critchley since the marriage also occurred in 1828 and he was seen with is wife, Sarah on the census in 1851 - unless he was secretly a bigamist.
The children will need to be investigated as one of the wives was not this George Kershaw's wife, but another George Kershaw.
Removed Mary Critchley as spouse for George Kershaw - she married a different person with the same name.
Removed William Kershaw-114 as son. There is no evidence George fathered a son at 16 and is tied to the Mary Critchley that was removed as spouse.
