Allen was born in 1616 in East Smithfield near St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, in a house owned by the King on loan to his father. He was the eldest son of Allen Apsley and his third wife Lucy St John. He was christened 6th September 1616 in All Hallows Church, Barking. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School for boys (entering in 1526), and Trinity College, Oxford (Allen didn’t complete his M.A. until 28th September 1663, after the civil wars). He was a Royalist Cavalier and commanded a troop during the Civil War. In 1645 he was Governor of Barnstaple in Devon. Served in Parliament as member for Thetford in Norfolk. He was buried at Westminster Abbey near the entrance of St Nicholas' Chapel on 17th October 1683. Find A Grave: Memorial #72178703 Allen Apsley
