Note: Origins of the Babb name:
Immigrants named BABB began arriving from England on the East Coast of America in the mid 1600's, we find from various records. In the mid 1700's there were Bavarians arriving on ships from port of Rotterdam to Philadelphia who were recorded as spelling their names BABP or BAP. Record keepers who wrote down what they heard often changed the names to BABB or BABBS to match the English names. However, the two groupings did not know of each other's backgrounds until recent years.
The origin of the name has been the subject of surmises over the years. Based on research of Elizabeth Babb of Yarmouth, Maine, a frequent visitor to England, we are convinced that it was not dreamed up by the early English but seems to have come from the Middle East! She gives us the following proof:
"In Saracenic (now Arabic, Semitic) BAB means Gate or Door. For example: 'BAB el Mandab' is the narrow neck at the base of the Red Sea. 'BAB al-Ajal' was the northernmost castle in the Lordship of Caesarea, Palestine in the 12th Century. 'BAB el Bahr' was the 'Sea Gate' at Palermo in the 12th century. The Druses, who may have come from Persia, used the title 'BAB' for a spiritual minister who embodied universal reason. And then we have 'Ali BABBA' of Arabian Nights fame, who found the door to the cave of the 40 thieves, which he sprang by saying 'Open Sesame.'
In England we find a 'BABBEWELL, Suffolk' which is the North-eastern gate of Bury St. Edmonds, and was famous in the 12th century as the site of a 'hospital' for wayfarers and a launching point for Crusaders to the Holy Land."
It may be that the Crusaders brought the use of the name back with them to England, along with many other words and interesting new ideas.
BABBACOMBE in Devon is the name of the Bay between Hope's Nose and Torquay and Teignmouth which help frame the entrance to the Teign River. In England a "COMBE" is a small valley, which combines to make "BABBACOMBE" - an entrance to a small valley. That is the picture as we follow the Teign River up from the Bay to Newton Abbot and Bishops-teignton, towns of early seafaring Babbs. Then we wander along the river valley through Devonshire near Hennock and Doddiscombsleigh, and there are records of a John BABBE on a Subsidy Roll as the biggest landowner in Doddiscombsleigh in 1524.
Although there are records of early BABBs in other parts of England, we believe that the emigrants to the New World came from the Devonshire and London areas.
