Elizabeth (Philpott) Stedman was born in Biddenden, Kent, England.
Elizabeth Philpott was born in 1582 in Biddenden, Kent, England. Her father may have been John Philpott.[1] She may have been christened on 2 Sep 1582 in Canterbury, Kent, England.[2]
She married Thomas Stedman about 19 May 1589 (1598?) in Biddenden, Kent, England.[3][4] See Research Note below re disputed documentation.
Possible Children:
Isaac, bapt. 21 Apr 1605, Biddenden, Kent; died 1678; immigrated to America at age 30 with two sons, Nathaniel and Isaac.[5][6]
Her husband Thomas Stedman died in 1648 in Biddenden, Kent, England.
Research Notes
It has been thought that she was the wife of Thomas Stedman, father of the immigrant, Isaac Stedman. However, that Thomas was born in 1578, and would have been eleven at the time of Elizabeth's marriage if it was in 1589. However, their first child was born in 1602.
An earlier version of this profile identified her as the child baptized September 2, 1582, at St. Dunstan's, Canterbury, Kent, England, daughter of John Philpott (b. December 1555) and Elizabeth Roper. If these parents did indeed have this daughter, and if the 1582 birthdate is correct, then it conflicts with the 1589 marriage record to a Thomas Stedman. Another researcher has questioned the children credited to this wife: "A marriage between Elizabeth Philpot and Thomas Stedman on the 15 May 1598 could not be found. The record is clear and easy to read, but the 15th is not recorded. There is a Marriage between Elizabeth Philpot and Thomas Steadman on 19 May 1589 - nine years earlier. This would have made Elizabeth Philpot who was Christened in Canterbury 2 September 1582 only 7 years of age when the marriage was performed. Elizabeth's record of parents is deficient.
If her mother, Elizabeth Roper, was indeed her mother then she would have been only 2 years of age when Elizabeth was born. Thomas Stedman married Elizabeth Andrews on 23 July 1603. Whether this is a second marriage for him or it is a different Thomas Stedman could not be determined because there was no death record of an Elizabeth, Wife of Thomas Stedman between 1589 and 1603.
It would appear that the children born between 1605 and 1618 to Thomas Stedman are the children of Elizabeth Andrews. Research needs to be done in surrounding parishes to find possible children of Elizabeth Philpot and Thomas Stedman." - GaryromrielHiggins1, 2014 [17][18]
Alternate death date Mar 1638, but record lacks first name.[19]
If documentation fails to clarify these issues, it is possible DNA will eventually solve the mystery. There are two descendants of the Stedman Biddenden family through Isaac who have done DNA testing on FTDNA.[20]
