John Ruthven was the son of Sir William Ruthven, of Ballernach, Lord of Ruthven, and an unknown mother. [1] [2] His date of birth is not provided in source but she is estimated to have been born c. 1385.
He was on an assize 10 August 1440, and Sheriff of Perth 21 April 1444.
Balfour Paul suggests he probably died before 26 July 1454, from which date William Murray of Gask was Sheriff of Perth.[3] According to Cowan, in 1443. John Gormac, of Atholl, at the head of a band of "freebooters",attacked Sir John Ruthven, sheriff of Perth while he was leading a thief from Atholl to the gallows. According to the Exchequer Rolls, Sir John was killed at this engagement however no trial is apparent. It may been probable that he died as a result of his wounds sustained.[4]
The name of his wife is not provided but he is known to have had a son:
