Biography

Disputed Origins

Many online trees and her findagrave memorial claim, without source, that she was Elizabeth Seeley, daughter of Captain Robert Seeley and his wife Mary Heath Mason, but there is no contemporary source found yet to confirm this surname or these parents.

Researcher Suzanne St John explains that the Seeley connection appears to be a misinterpretation of Mathias St. John's 1669 will in which he made of bequest to "marther selle one cowe and one ewe". Some have interpreted "marther" to mean "mother," but given that the same will made reference to his "mother Joan in London," such interpretation is inaccurate.

A Seeley Society query suggests that Elizabeth was born in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1634, and that she had four St. John offspring.[1]

This profile claims she died 5 Sep 1732, without source. Her findagrave profile claims, also without source, that she died 17 May 1728.[2]. An accurate source for her real death date is sought.

According to Suzanne St. John, of the St. John Genealogy Project and Ancestry DNA Database, and citing “Lineage & Biography of St. John Family” by Archie St. John, 1946, Elizabeth, the wife of Mathias II (1628-1728), was a first cousin and probably baptized 6 November 1631 at St. Botolph's Bishopsgate, London, the daughter of Mathew St. John (1611-1670) (himself son of Sir William St. John, knight 1562-1638)) and Sara, based on DNA evidence.[3]

Elizabeth Seeley was made up based on Mathias St. John's 1669 Will where he wrote to my "marther selle one cowe and one ewe". Mather (mother) selle (sell) not Mother Seeley. He wanted one cow and one ewe sold and the proceeds to go to his mother Joan in London.

• According to “Lineage & Biography of St. John Family” by Archie St. John, 1946, the wife of Mathias II (1628-1728) was Elizabeth St. John, a first cousin. She is probably the daughter of Mathew St. John, (son of Sir William St. John, knight 1562-1638)) and Sara. Her sister Sara was the likely wife of John Gregory, a shoemaker like her father, Mathew St. John. We are also a match to a descendant of John Gregory whose only link to the St. John family is the wife of John Gregory.

see the comment below by Perrin Ayers. She is a DNA match to my brother Jason and we descend from Mathew's son Mathewes the brother to Elizabeth and Sara. Her mtDNA matches Mathias II's daughter Mary St. John and Mary's mother is probably Elizabeth St. John to also match my branch.

Thanks, Suzanne; I've incorporated the information from your comment into the narrative (except for the DNA info). Please see Edison's response to Anne B's query about DNA help for this profile here:

I just noticed this has the 1611 birth year for Mathew. Unfortunately, I had someone with better eyesight than me look at the 1611 baptism and it appears that it connects to a Samson family rather than Sension variation. What we know is Mathew St. John of St. Johnstown was listed as a Gentleman of Fethard, Tipperary, Ireland in 1608. His birth is probably closer to 1580-1590. His father William was given a patent for St. Johnstown in 1601 and made Sheriff of Tipperary in 1612 by Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond.

Source for Mathew

The Grand Panel of the county of Wexford, in the county of Wexford, the 25th of July 1608 had listed as a Gentleman of Fethard, “Mathew Sigen of Sigenstoune, Gent” [Mathew St. John of St. Johnstown [Castle], Gentleman] . St. Johnstown is an area of Fethard encompassing 857 acres, 2 roods, 33 perches with a castle by the same name.

We need a source for her death. Findagrave lists a different date. Neither has a source.

Elizabeth's mtDNA is H3g1a. No, I don't descend from her but my 1-difference matches do (a few actually) . She is their mtDNA ancestress. I as well am H3g1a as is my earliest known mtDNA ancestress. This leads me to believe that our mrca (mtDNA) was born in England ca 1575 or so. [email address removed]
Removed Timothy Stanley as father. His daughter Elizabeth married a Mark St John not Matthias St John.

Removing Timothy Stanley-149 as father of this Elizabeth, since he is the father of an Elizabeth Stanley that married Mark who is brother to Matthias.

I overlooked that I have a Sarah Seeley-259 in my family tree as 7th GGM, so this may help me find a geographic and century connection to this tentatively named Elizabeth Seeley. Thanks for patience in getting better sources.

Thanks, will find my source...I had set her spouse a un-merged match as notation to myself to research more.

So the merges can wait if desired, unless someone else enters documentation.

Please, what is the source for her maiden name? Thanks.
