The Callaghans / O’Callaghans were descendents of Ceallachán, who was the King of Munster from AD 935 to 954 under the Eóganachta dynasty, centred around Cashel in County Tipperary. The dynasty dominated southern Ireland from the 6/7th to the 10th centuries. The first to use the surname Callaghan were the lords of Cineál Aodha in Southern County Cork. The family lost most of its original lands in the Anglo-Norman conquests in the 12th century and was forced north to an area near Mallow in County Cork. The family was once again dispossessed by the Cromwellian Plantation in the mid 17th century. The head family settled in East Clare and the other families were dispersed.
Born near Newcastle, County Limerick, Ireland about 1820. Fled Ireland in early 1850s with family in the wake of the famine and settled in London. Worked as a Costermonger (street seller) in London. Died in London in 1873 from Chronic Bronchitis, aged 53. Refer to attached PDF for story of the Callaghan and the Cleary families.
