Started school in old School Street School in Dover, NH, was still in first grade when she moved to Miami, FL. Hated leaving squirrel fur coat and bonnet behind, but had no need for it in the south. One time in Okalanta Kenneth and I were coming back from town and we set the sawgrass on fire. That muck burned like wood so it burned up the road. The townspeople must have known who set it afire. They had to all turn out and put it out. Another time I walking home and a panther chased me. The whole town turned out with guns and took me home. We lived in West Palm Beach at the end of World War I, They gave us 12 inch flags on a stick and sent us home from school. On Sundays in West Palm Beach mother used to take us to the common to hear the Sousa band. My father homesteaded another 40 acres in Walton. While we lived in Walton we had washtubs of fish, crab or crawfish, big sea turtles and their eggs. The Indian River was clear as glass and the banks were covered with big magnolia trees, which now have all disappeared 50 years later. Gertrude Moehle [her lifelong friend] palled together, we lived in the water, we could cast a net as well as anyone and see what you were casting for. Take our rowboat, turn it upside down and come up inside it. we'd sit on the dock moonlit nights. Walk to Stuart to see our favorite movie serial and come back on the train at night. We'd go down to Eden and get all the drop oranges in a croaker sack, but it was too heavy, we'd leave most by the roadside on the way home, we couldn't carry them. Tended the post office and did housework while Mother was up north taking care of her mother. Had a boyfriend from West Palm for 3 years. Left Walton to go north in 1924. Went to high school, then in training for a nurse at Newton Center Hospital in Newton, MA. Kept house for Mrs Albert Wharbuton in Shoreyville in Rochester, NH [at some time in this period]. went to work for Fernald & Hackett's [restaurant] in 1933. Mother and sisters babysat the children, [she worked in the evening]. Inherited 134 acres from her mother [along Salmon Falls Road in Rochester, NH], Alma and Esme got the house.
