Biography

Henry Hewitt was born 8 (or 9) Oct 1797 at New London, Connecticut, the fifth child of Nathaniel Hewitt and Sarah Avery of Stonington, Connecticut.

He married in 1825 @ Vergennes, Vermont, Alethea F. Brush (d. 1842). The following children are listed in his online memorial site (unsourced, thus uncertain):

3. Charles Nathaniel Hewitt (1835–1910)

Henry Hewitt passed away 22 Jul 1869 at Potsdam, New York. His grave is in Bayside Cemetery, Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York, USA ^[1].

The following is carved into what appears to be his grave marker stone, made of granite:

BORN IN NEW LONDON, CONN. OCTOBER 9, 1797. GRADUATED IN MEDICINE AT YALE COLLEGE IN 1826 AND PRACTICED HIS ART WITH SUCCESS UNTIL NEAR HIS DEATH HE SERVED AS A SURGEON DURING THE REBELLION 1861-65 IN THE FIELD UNTIL DISABLED BY DISEASE AND THEREAFTER AT THE ENROLLING DEPOT AT MALONE N.Y. DIED IN POTSDAM N.Y. JULY 22, 1869
