George Westlake was born in Devon in 1843. He migrated to South Australia on the Schah Jehan from Plymouth 24 August 1860 to Port Adelaide on 1 December 1860 when he was 17.[1] His older brother Richard, sister-in-law Mary (both migrated in 1857) and father Simon (migrated 1847) were already in the colony.
George married Martha Hatt (recorded as Hall) on 27 September 1867 at the residence of Richard Burgess, Gorge, Yankalilla. She was 19 and he was 24.[2] They had two children before she died in 1871.
