Biography

Henry Marshal, Dean of York, Bishop of Exeter

Henry was a son of John FitzGilbert (The Marshal) and, it is presumed, his second wife Sybil de Salisbury.[1][2][3][4]

He was appointed Dean of York on 16 September 1189.[2]

As Henry, dean of York, he was the first-named of a group of justices who visited Yorkshire and Cumberland in 1192.[2]

Described as bishop-elect of Exeter on 10 February 1194:[2][5]

"Henricus Marescallus frater W[illelmi] Marescalli senioris, fit episcopus Exoniensis"

He died in 1206:[3][6]

"Obiit Henricus Marescallus Exoniæ episcopus"

His tomb is in Exeter Cathedral:[7][8]

"After governing his church for about twelve years and a half. Bishop Marshal died on 26th October, 1206, and was interred on the north side of his cathedral-choir under an altar-tomb of grey marble. Two seals of the prelate are extant : one resembling the effigy on his tomb ; the crosier as tall as his figure, but very simple in form."
