Biography

Mary was born in 1897. (NOTE: Charles K. Estano - see Sources - calls her "Mary A." and lists her birthdate as Aug 15 of 1896. He also provided the nickname of "Mammi.") She is the daughter of Robert Estano III and Mary C. Leahy. See the profiles of her father and her brother Frederick for most of what I know about her so far.[1]

Through a death record of one of their sons, I learned that she married John L. Hayes in Salem, MA. The 1940 census shows the family at 32 Clifton St., Salem. John and Mary were very close in age (both 43 at the time of the census). Mary is shown as born in Nova Scotia, and a naturalized US citizen. The household also includes a daughter and 4 sons: Marguerite H. (22: having completed 4 yr of high school, a full-time bookkeeper at the gas company, 40 hr/wk, making $870/yr); John L. Jr. (17, having completed 4 years of high school); Robert F. (13); Lis F. (10 - or "Lio"?; presumably Leo); & Phillip (5). John L. Sr. was a full-time caretaker at the city park, working 50 hr/wk for $1,560/yr. Mary herself was a full-time homemaker.

Her nephew Charles K. Estano (see Sources) wrote the following, in a genealogical family newsletter in 1992, concerning the recent passing of Mary's son Leo. Quoting:

It is also with regrets that we report the death of Leo Hayes, of Salem, MA. Leo was the son of Mary, known as Aunt Mammi, our father's [Frederick's] sister. The Hayes family are the only first cousins that we have. We each remember those wonderful days at Forest River Park [the city park of Salem]. It was our place away from home, and we all loved it so very much. Leo was born there and shared so much with all of the family from Boston. Leo never married, but took care of his mother and shared his home with his brother, Philip. We share the loss of Leo with his sister, Margerete [sic], and with his brothers, Bob and Phil.... Recently we went to see Grandma's grave, and Tracy, Gail and I had lunch at Forest River Park just outside the entrance to the Pioneer Village. Memories all returned.
