Biography

Albert was born in 1922. He was the sixth-born child (& 6th son) of Frederick Estano and Minnie S. Kimball. See the father's profile for information about the early years of his household.

In the 1940 census, when he had just turned 18, he was living with his parents and siblings at 419 Washington St. in Boston. He had left school and had been in the workforce for 24 weeks, with a reported total income of $180 (?!). His occupation is entered as "CCC" -- which his obituary explains as the Civilian Conservation Corps. The obituary mentions that he had joined that unit at the age of 16 (which would have meant before the 1940 census count) and moved to Wyoming, and then to New Hampshire. The obituary also reports [quoting]:

He attended schools in Boston, Massachusetts and later attended McKendree College in Lebanon, IL. On November 12, 1947 at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church he married Muriel J. "Joy" Schmidt. Recently they celebrated 58 wonderful years of marriage together. Al had a very strong faith in his Lord and put his trust in God's hands throughout his life. He was an active member of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church serving as an officer and councilman for many years. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy from March 21, 1941 to March 31, 1961. Al participated in seven amphibious landings during World War II in the South Pacific Theatre. He served as the independent medical representative administering the needs of 350 men aboard the U.S.S. Paricutin. He retired with 20 years of service to his country achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Following his naval career, he worked in the supply department at North Chicago V.A. Medical Center retiring as the assistant supply officer in 1977. He was a life member of The Fleet Reserve Association and recently became a member of the Kenosha Moose Lodge #286. Joy and Al enjoyed traveling, golfing, reading and spending their winters in Harlingen, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Muriel J. "Joy" Estano of Kenosha; a son, David A. (Lauren Tenuta) Estano of Green Bay, WI; two daughters, Kay E. (Mark) Chodoronek of Centreville, VA and Nancy J. (Ed) Gember of Kenosha; nine grandchildren, Addison, Ian, Hayden, Trenton, Maison and Zion Estano, Michael and Matthew Chodoronek and Ryan Leigh; four brothers, John, Charles, William and George Estano and two sisters, Dorothy Proctor and Marion Thompson. He is preceded in death by a daughter Susan in infancy; eight brothers, Frederick, Stanley, Robert, Edward, George, Richard, James and Robert and a sister, Helen Dube.

The veterans burial records database also shows that he served in the "US Navy, HMC" (hospital medical corps??). Records for retired military personnel confirm that he retired from the navy in 1961. Somewhere else, I read that he died in Harlingen, TX [their winter home]. However, his obituary notes that he died in hospital in Milwaukee. (Home was in Kenosha WI.) He was buried in the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, at Union Grove, WI.[1]
