Notes

Note N1507/10/1997, George Sarfatty:
This past weekend we went to the Immigration Museum on Ellis Island. A lot of the exhibits contain quotes from persons who past through telling tid bits of what happened to a typical person.
Persons who travelled steerage were transferred on small boats from the large ships to the imigration center on Ellis Island. There they left their baggage on the main floor room to be hopefully sent to their final destination. As they climbed the stairs to the next area where they would be givin a six second physical, see if they were literate in their native language, have enough money to get to their final destination in the U.S. (and then some), and were not contract workers, they were observed to see if they were physically or mentally impaired. Yes, while climbing the stairs!! If they limped, looked dazed or confused or had something obviously wrong with them they would have their clothes marked with chaulk. One woman related in her story that she was confused and tired from her trip and they thought she was mentally impaired. They marked her clothes with a big "X". Later they screened her more carfully and found that she could assemble a puzzle and put the pegs in the correct holes on another test. He name was Victoria Sarfatti Fernandez.

(2) Is Abraham Ergas the brother to Shlomo "Solomon" Ergas, who had a brother Abraham? or brother to Clara (Ergas] Sarfatty?
