George W. Nicks was born in 1826 in Tennessee. He came to Arkansas about 1839 with his father, Anderson Nicks, his stepmother Rebecca, four brothers and one sister. They settled in Johnson county, Arkansas. Anderson bought and homesteaded several hundred acres of land, including eighty acres in Johnson county on the Franklin county line. One of Andersons' neighbors was ZEDOC and MARTHA BRASHEARS who had two sons, WALTER and ABSOLEM and five girls, ELTJ_NDER, REBECCA, SARAH, MATCTHA, and CATHERINE. In 1846 Anderson decided it was time to move on again and sold most of his land in preparation to moving to Texas. He sold forty acres each to his sons JOHN B. and GEORGE W. NICKS. The forty acres each was on the Franklin county line. GEORGE'S was on the southern most end, not far from the river. West of his land in Franklin county, were the communities of Denning and Alix.
