Note
Note:
According to family tradition there were three brothers - Lairds from Scotland - who came to America in the early 1800's. One son who was the father of George Washington Laird remained in the New York area, one son traveled south (Mississippi ?), and the other son traveled west. It has been thought by the family that the Lairds in Maryland are related. Two or three of these Lairds married into the Dupont family. The Laird who traveled west pioneered in the fur trade, along with the first John Jacob Astor. The 1900 census, however, indicates that the father of George Washington Laird was born in Ireland and his mother was born in Delaware.
