Biography

John was the second of eight children of John and Flora Erickson, born in Hancock, Minnesota[1] He grew up in Hancock[2]where his father was a hardware merchant.[3] In 1900, John was living in Wheaton, Minnesota, working in a store where his father had a business partner.[4] [5]

John married Ella McGowan when he was 21 years old and she was 16. The Morris Tribune reported in August 1901, "A. L. Stegner was called to Hancock Monday to officiate at the marriage of John Erickson, Jr. and Miss Ella McGowan. This will dispose of the case of the state vs. Mr. Erickson, which has been in the district court since October, 1899."[6]Ella had given birth to a son also named John Erickson in November 1899, when she was 15 years old. John was indicted by a Grand Jury for "having on the 16th day of April A. D. 1898 [should be 1899] carnal knowledge of a female child under the age of sixteen years, to wit, of the age of thirteen years [should be fourteen years]. . ." The defense attorney's motion for a change of venue had been denied by the court.[7]

A few months after the marriage, on November 15, 1901, the Hancock Record reported that John Erickson Jr. left on a business trip to the coast. By 1910, John and Ella were divorced.[8]John had moved to Washington state[9] where he went into the horse and stock business in Krupp, in Grant County.[10] He married for the second time July 10, 1910 to Cecelia Moller in Westminster, British Columbia,[11] and he and his wife Cecelia had a daughter Flora.[12] He had sold his stock by 1912 and entered the mercantile business. He became vice president of the Marlin State Bank in Marlin, Washington, in 1915. He was also president of the Marlin Investment company and had extensive farm holdings.[13]

In 1942, John was living in Odessa, Washington.[14] He died at age 71 in Spokane, Washington, and is buried in Odessa, Cemetery, Odessa, Washington.[15]
