Oscar "Emil" Rönnbåck was born 13 NOV 1879 in Pålänge, Nederkalix, Norrbotten, Sweden
to Johannes Rönnbåck and Emma Josefdotter Lindback. He changed his last name to Asplund while in the military. He emigrated to Chicago in 1903 and married a fellow immigrant, Anna Louisa Johansson, in 1908. He ran a coffee cart in the city. His children remembered him roasting coffee beans at night in the basement of the house they lived in. He also wrote for the Swedish language newspaper in Chicago.
He and Anna had 8 children altogether. Two (Elsie and Harold) died in childhood in 1914 of flu; Frederik died in Jönköping soon after his premature birth. Emil and Anna had returned to Sweden for the birth of Frederik and his twin, and remained because of WWI travel restrictionsbefore returning to Chicago in 1916. During that time, he worked as director of Jönköping Night Watch.
He and Anna later separated but did not divorce. He died in 1955 in Chicago.
