Biography

Frances Hiestand was born on 17 Feb 1797;^[1] she was the daughter of John Hiestand and Barbara Strickler.^[2]

In 1818,^{[3] [4]} Frances Hiestand's father, John Hiestand, moved with his family from Virginia to Jackson Township, Washington County, Indiana, settling in Section 1 near Martinsburg. ^[5]

About 1819, Frances Hiestand married James Wesley Martin. The marriage date is estimated base on the birth date of their oldest child, Mary Ann Martin, on 20 Feb 1821.^[6] It is also consistent with Frances Hiestand (& her family) moving from Virginia to Indiana.

On 20 Feb 1821 in Indiana,^[6] Frances (Hiestand) Martin, wife of James W. Martin, gave birth to a daughter, Mary Ann Martin.

In 1830,^[7] Frances Martin's husband, James W. Martin, was enumerated in the 1830 federal census, and he was living in Washington County, Indiana as head of household, which included [probable names]: a) males - 2 (<5) [Henry & Thomas Martin], 2 (5 - 10) [John & ??], 1 (30 - 40) [James W. Martin]; b) females - 1 (5 - 10) [Mary Ann Martin], 1 (30 - 40) [Frances Martin]. Of note, on the same 1830 census enumeration sheet,^[7] appear James' male relatives: Enoch, Stephen, and Lewis Martin.

In 1840,^[8] Frances Martin's husband, James Martin, was enumerated in the 1840 federal census, and he was living in Jackson Township, Washington County, Indiana as head of household, which included: a) males - 1 (15 - 20), 1 (20 - 30), 1 (60 - 70) [James W. Marin]; b) females - 1 (10 - 15), 3 (20 - 30), 1 (50 - 60) [Frances Martin].

Frances (Hiestand) Martin died on 17 Sep 1849, and she was buried in the Enoch Martin Cemetery, Pekin, Washington County, Indiana. Her gravestone states she was the wife of J.W. Martin. ^[1]
