Biography

Miletta Emmeretta Lewis (who was known as Miletta or Emmeretta during her life) was born in January 1834 to Milton Lewis and Anne Bushnell Clarke. Miletta married at least once, and possibly a second time. Miletta died in 1910, but there is some confusion about the actual date -- her gravestone lists her death as 1909, but census records and Connecticut records list her death 1910. Miletta was a wife and homemaker.

Various facts about Miletta's life prior to her marriage to Jourdon Walker seem to have been obscured in public documents. First, prior to her marriage in 1864, Miletta may have had two children with John Hennenberg, but there is no record of their marriage. Furthermore, her two children, Emogene and John Oscar, kept the Lewis surname into adulthood. In addition, the marriage record for Miletta and Jourdon Walker states that Miletta was unmarried. Second, the 1990 census indicates that Miletta had 5 children, and 4 were currently living. Records indicate that Miletta had 6 children with Jourdon, plus the two prior children are not included in this number.

• 1834 - Miletta was born on January 9 in Haddam, Connecticut to Milton Lewis and Anne Bushnell Clarke.^[1]

• 1850 - Miletta is listed as living with her parents and siblings in Haddam, Connecticut. In the 1850 census she is listed as Maria.^[2]

• 1850s - Miletta birthed two children, Emogene and John Oscar during these years. John Hennenberg is the supposed father, but there are no records of his connection to Miletta or any possible marriage. Nevertheless, DNA matches between Miletta's descendants from her marriage with Jourdon and and John Oscar's descendants suggest that Miletta did birth these children.^[3]

• 1860 - Miletta is listed as living with her parents and several siblings in Haddam, Connecticut, along with 7 year old, Emma Jene Lewis and an infant Lewis. Since Miletta's parents are in their 60s, these younger children are most likely grandchildren, and based on DNA results are probably Miletta's children.^[4]

• 1864 - Miletta married Jourdon Walker on November 8, 1864 in Essex, Connecticut.^[5]

• 1870 - Miletta is listed as living in Old Saybrook, CT with her husband and three daughters. Note that her children born prior to her marriage with Jourdon are not listed. It is not clear where they are living -- they cannot be found in the census for the County.^[6]

• 1880 - Miletta is listed as living in Killingworth, Connecticut with her husband, three daughters, and son.^[7]

• 1882 - Jourdon passes away on November 2, 1982 in Middletown, CT. ^[8] He is buried in the Higganum Cemetery in Haddam, CT.^[9]

• 1900 - Emerretta is living in Middletown with her son, George Tilden.^[10]

• 1910 - Emeretta passes away on April 20, 1910 in Preston, Connecticut, and is buried with her husband in the Higganum Cemetery.^[1][11] Interestingly, she is listed as a patient at the Norwich State Hospital in Preston, Connecticut on May 7, after she died.^[12] Note that Emerretta's death is inaccurately listed as 1909 on Find-A-Grave, which is likely due an error based on the wrong date in Emma Walker Lee's bible when a replacement stone was installed.^[13][14]
