Biography

Hallie Mae McChesney was the 2nd child and 1st daughter of Vernon Twiggs McChesney and Mary Elizabeth Erwin nee Lively, born on January 29, 1881. Hallie was born in Wills Point, Texas where her father had an up and coming law firm, Kearby & McChesney, Attorneys at Law. The 1880 Van Zandt County, Texas census listed Vernon Twiggs as Attorney at Law, age 25, b. KY, living in Wills Point, Texas; wife listed as Mary E. McChesney, and their son Louis P. McChesney listed as 1, born in Texas. During the following 5 years, 3 more children would be born: Hallie Mae, Bonnie Lillian, and Olin Lamar.

Tragically her father, Vernon Twiggs McChesney died of "Consumption" (Tuberculosis) on August 17, 1888 at the young age of 31. Mary Liveley McChesney, became head of household with four young children, ages 9 through 1. Halllie Mae was just 7 years old at the time. Her older brother sold newspapers as the Wills Point train station and her mother Mary took in laundry and operated a boarding house. Her family moved to Texarkana, Arkansas when he was about 14 years old (1894). As she grew up she became a very industrious young lady helping the family whenever possible.
