Velma was born February 7, 1903. Velma Farris. She became a Christian at a young age. Her father named his fishing boat the Velma,after her, and she talked of it as "my boat". She went to high school in Machias, and lived with relatives during this time. Her Aunt Malvina and Aunt Hattie were strong influences on her. They attended the Methodist church in Machias. She married James Wellington Robertson on January 20th, 1923. As an adult, she taught Sunday School, worked at L.L. Bean and raised a large family on a limited income. She would take her children in the summer to their vegetable garden, drop them off to weed and pick them up after work. Having a definite Maine accent, besides "ayuh", she was often heard to say "Land O Goshen"," Land Sakes!", and "Gumphries". After suffering a stroke in the 1970's, she lived with her daughter Janet, sometimes also staying with her daughter Janice. Janice remembers that often when she stayed with them in Remer, Minnesota she would spend hours at a time with her open Bible in her lap. She loved lobster, creamed onions and chocolates. She passed away in September 1982 while living in South Paris, Maine. [1]
