Biography

David Nichol and his younger brothers Thomas and Alva were all born in Tennessee, according to successive U.S. Censuses covering them, but exactly where is unknown--probably Davidson County, since David's obituary reported that as his birthplace. They all were present in Wilson County, TN, for the 1820 Census, along with their father Benjamin, eldest brother John W., a woman of appropriate age to have been their mother, and a teenaged girl not further identified. As it appears that Benjamin Nichol began buying land in Wilson County in 1811, the family probably lived in Davidson County before that. They moved to Carroll County, TN, between April and November, 1827. From deed records it appears that John W. went there the earliest, bought land, and subsequently sold parcels of it to his father and brothers. John W. also appears to have been the "point man" for the subsequent move of John, David and Alva to Hickman Co., KY., where all three are buried in Rock Spring Cemetery, which covers the Hickman/Fulton County line. Thomas appears on Hickman censuses, too, but his burial place is unknown. David must have made this move soon after he sold many of his possessions to Daniel Coleman of Carroll Co. in October, 1833, although he does not appear to have bought land in Kentucky until 1836. An "S" representing David's middle name--supposedly standing for Spencer--was reported by more than one of my older cousins; no official documentation of a middle name has been found. Another family tree, drawn up circa 1927 by Julia Nichol Amburgey, gives her grandfather David's middle name as MacQuerter; no further documentation has been found to support this.

David was a farmer and a master tanner. A document recorded in the Carroll County courthouse on March 12, 1832 recognizes "Murdoch Gillis bound as apprentice to David Nichol to learn the art and mystery of a Tanner." David very likely provided leather stock for the saddlery that was an early business founded in Pleasant Exchange, a town just south of the Carroll/Henderson County line, now known as Wildersville [see "History of Henderson County TN" by Auburn Powers, 1930]. Among the items sold to Daniel Coleman in 1833 were David's complete stock of tanned and raw leather, tanning shop equipment, and all open accounts of customers. Coleman, a cousin of David's wife Martha, subsequently owned land next to David and Martha in Hickman Co., KY--Robert B. Nichol, 2015.
"DAVID NICHOL son of Benjamin and Susan Nichol; native of Davidson Co., Tenn.; moved to Carroll Co., Tenn., later to Hickman Co., Ky. where he died July 22, 1850." William Scott Nichol, a leading merchant, tobacco manufacturer, saw-miller and farmer, was born in Hickman County, KY., April 16, 1840, the son of David and Martha (Mitchell) Nichol, both of whom were born in Virginia, he in 1798 and she in 1808. When young both immigrated to Tennessee, where they married, and afterward removed to Kentucky. In that State the father died in 1850. He was a practical tanner, and carried on a large tan-yard business, but in connection ran a large farm. He was a Whig in politics, and both he and wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In their family were eight children, six sons and two daughters. In 1856 the mother and children came to Texas County, MO., and located one-half mile from Licking, though there was only a log store to mark the place. The mother died here in her eighty-second year.
