Biography

Came from England and settled in US in 1774; UEL [United Empire Loyalist Oath] in 1788; granted land in Aylesford Township [Nova Scotia] near Morden; built cabin of handmade clay bricks. Had 5 children. --Charlotte Vardy, from a Morristown history booklet [see Sources]
According to Eaton's "The History of King's County," the final boundary between King's and Annapolis counties divided the townships of Wilmot [Annapolis] and Aylesford [King's], but exactly where the boundary fell was not well-established until the first half of the 19th Century. Before then, says Eaton, vital statistics placing an event in Wilmot might be mistaken for Aylesford, or vice-versa.
RBN Notes:
The 1801 marriage bond for Fanny Nixon and Francis Hutchinson [see image in Pictures* file for Fawnia Lowden] states that he was a "Widower of Wilmot" and she a "Widow of Cornwallis." The Township of Cornwallis was in east-central Kings County and is now called Kentville. The Novia Scotia Records Office confirmed that this is not to be mistaken for the village of Cornwallis in modern-day Digby County.

--from the Acadian Recorder newspaper estate notices, 3 May 1817:
Estate = Francis Hutchinson of Windsor
Administrator = Fawnia Hutchinson; Benja. Dewolf
Died = January 1, 1816

Pearl Saunders reported via email 12/12/07: "...Doris (Hutchinson) MacArthur told me a few years ago that she and her father Hartley Hutchinson [that's Hartley Lewis H., son of George Elmer H. and Adelia Rainsforth, b. 14 Jan 1905, Morristown, Kings Co., NS; d. 08 Oct 1995, Morristown--RBN] felt he was buried in a small abandoned cemetery in North Kingston (Kings County). How they came to this conclusion I do not know..." --this would place Francis' grave in Aylesford Township, probably not far from his home near Morden. Since this email was sent, we have learned that Francis' death, by drowning, was recorded in Windsor, Hants Co.; but Bathsheba Ruggles' grave has not been found. There is a fair chance that she, and any of their offspring who may have died young, are in this abandoned cemetery. The headstones could be subsoil by now.--RBN

Pearl,
I had an opportunity to go through some files at WHHS. I could not find where Francis and Fawnia Hutchinson are buried, but, as the Old Parish Burying Ground is, to my knowledge, the only Protestant cemetery of the time in Windsor. It could be that they had no headstone or that it has been destroyed. We only have the Headstone Inscriptions and some burial information at our disposal.
However, I did find what I believe to be an important clue.
* Acadian Recorder, 4 January 1817 - Estate of Francis Hutchinson of Windsor for settlement. Fawnia Hutchinson, administrator
* Acadian Recorder, 15 December 1821 - Mrs. Hutchinson published an ad in the Acadian Recorder, "Union Inn, Windsor to be let immediately and posession given very adventageous situation of the inn, its many conveniences and superior stabling renders it will deserve the attention, ...to become Inn Holder. N.B. an acre or two Dyke land within 200 yds of the inn may be rented with it if desired."
* 31 March 1839, ae.78, Fawina Hutchinson.
I do not know where this hotel was located, but it was probably near the waterfront. This was before the railroad and the road bridge across the Avon river. Because of the tides it was often necessary for travelers to stop over at Windsor to wait for a ferry to take them round the Minas Basin, down the Bay of Fundy, or to Saint John or Boston. There were a lot of hotels and inns in Windsor during this period.
If the Hutchinsons owned the Union Inn, as suggested, there must be a record at the Registry of Deeds. I will see what I can find.
Cheers,
John

Found by Pearl Saunders in files of Nova Scotia Records Management: Petition of Mrs. Fawnia Hutchinson for ferry and tavern license. She has a gondola and two boats at Cornwallis, ca. 1816. Chipman Family NSARM MG 1 Vol. 186 No. 36 To The Honorable Justices of the Sessions in and for the County of Kings. The Petition of Fawnia Hutchinson of Windsor in the County of Hants, widow. Humbly Sheweth That your Petitioner has for many years held a license for the keeping a Ferry at Cornwallis and since the period of her having relinguished attending to the same herself has invariably exerted herself to obtain such a tenant as would give satisfaction to the Public. That understanding the Public were dissatisfied with the person last holding it, your Petitioner lost no time in getting him removed thereupon, and with full assurance of the future enjoyment of the profits arising from such Ferriage, and of a continuation of the License, your Petitioner expended heavy sums of money in putting the Public House in repair, and in the procurement of the boats requisite for the accommodation of the said Ferry. That your Petitioner now has a Gondola and two boats, which are fully adequate to the calls upon such Ferry and had agreed with Mr. John Starr to become her tenant, who was to have opened Public House, and attended to the duties of the said Ferry some time back, but that your Petitioner is sorry to learn that a Mr. William Starr has obtained a license for the same upon the ground that the Ferriage was not attended to in a manner satisfactory or necessary to the calls of the Public. Your Petitioner, therefore Humbly prays that your Honor will be pleased to continue the license to her tenant Mr. John Starr in the same simple ? (writing unclear) and beneficial manner that your Petitioner has hitherto enjoyed it with full assurance that nothing shall be wanting on the part of your Petitioner to provide every accommodation suitable to render such Ferry convenient and satisfactory to the Public. And your Petitioner as in Duty bound With ? (writing unclear) ever pray (wonder if this should read "With every prayer" ??) Fawnia Hutchinson (PEARL'S NOTE: The William Starr mentioned above might have been the son-in-law of Fawnia's late husband Francis Hutchinson as a William Starr married Harriet, the daughter of Francis and his first wife).
