Biography
Melvina Burk(e) was born on Christmas day, in 1810, in Sullivan county, Tennessee, a daughter of Reuben Burk and his wife, Lucy Forbes. On October 1, 1829, Melvina married John Steadman, Jr. born 1808, in Sullivan county, Tennessee, a son of John Steadman, born circa 1780, in Virginia. Melvina and John became the parents of the following children:
- John Patton Steadman, born September 30, 1830, died January 4, 1917, married Mary Elizabeth Dolen
- Mary Steadman, (probable daughter) born circa 1831, in Sullivan county, Tennessee, married James Conkin
- William Steadman, born circa 1833, died after 1860
- Nathan Steadman, born circa 1837
- James Steadman, born circa 1839
- Hannah E. Steadman, born circa 1845, married James Patton Posten, on February 8, 1887
- George Steadman, born December 5, 1849, died August 6, 1931, married Annie Eliza Bover, parents of six children
Some of the children of Melvina Burk spell their name Stidmon, instead of Steadman. This was an old spelling of the family name, which dates back to the earliest patriarch of this family, Christopher Stidmon, in Virginia. The Stidmon Family Cemetery, in Kingsport, Sullivan county, Tennessee is where the family of her eldest son, John Patton Steadman aka Stidmon is buried. [1]
Melvina's husband, John Steadman aka Stidmon died November 14, 1871, and is buried in the Depews Chapel Cemtery, in Sullivan Gardens, Sullivan county, Tennessee. Melvina (Burke) Stidmon died January 27, 1897, and is buried with him. [2]
