Biography

Peter Courten/Courteen was a brother of William Courten.

The Courten Pedigree in the Visitation of London did not record Peter but did record that his brother William was the son of William Courten "of Leye came into England in tyme of persecution in Flanders" and Margaret Casier.[1]

“.. in 1606 [Sir] William Courten, his brother [Sir] Peter Courten, who resided in Middelburg in the Netherlands, and his brother-in-law John de Moncy established a very successful ‘joint stock’ company, where Sir William held half the shares and the other two a quarter each. This company traded successfully until 1631, at most a year after Sir Peter Courten’s death, and was reputed to have generated a return of between £150,000 and £200,000 annually. The company traded primarily with countries such as Italy, Spain, Portugal and the coast of Barbary (North Africa) specialising in the silk and linen trade from Holland and Flanders”.[2]

"Peter Curteen (Courteen), a Dutchman, of Belgium and London" was knighted on 22 Feb 1623/1624 at Whitehall.[3]

In the will of his nephew Sir Peter Courten Bt. [son of Sir William Courten], the will made on 18 Jun 1624 and proved on 12 Jul 1624[4] the Testator nominated as one of his Overseers his uncle Sir Peter Courton of Middleborough, knight [Middleborough in the Province of Zeland].

Around the time of the death of his nephew, Sir Peter Courteen of Middleborough was recorded corresponding with a John Harris / Harrison regarding business matters in Virginia.[5]

He was also connected with his brother Sir William Courteen in the settling of Barbados.[6]

A Peter Bondaen and his sons were Executors of Sir Peter Courten of Midleburg.[7]
