THE MAYFLOWER QUARTERLY September 2014 Pages 169-171 Tbe "will found" is that of Samuel Porter, who married Thomas Rogers doscendant (#236) Remember Makepeace'. Prior to learning of the will, we had been able to place Samuel and Remember in Lebanon, Connecticut, where the hirths of seven children (three of whom lived to adulthood) were recorded. No probate records, however, were found in Connecticut for Samuel or Remember l'orter, Connecticut land records shed no additional light. A search of deeds showed the presence of various "Samuel Porters" well into the 19th century but nothing indicated that any of these various Samuels was "ours." And then, a vigilant and much-appreciated Rogers descendant (thank you, Marjorie HoweH!) sent us the last will and testament of Samuel Porter, husband of Remember. Ii became clear why Samuel had no probate records in Connecticut - he had moved to Nova Scotia! Not only did Samuel's will lead to death dates for Samuel and Remember, it also provided the names of three additional Porter children whose births were not recorded in Connecticut. Each of the surviving Porter children, whose number is now doubled to six, will receive a biography in future publications. III the meantime, however, Remember Makepeace's biograpby has been expanded to include this new information. 236 REMEMBER MAKEPEACEs (Abigail Tisdale4, Anna" Rogers, John', Thomas') was born, probably at Taunton before 1711 (based on her date of marriage), the daughter of William and Abigail (Tisdale) Makepeace. Hcr identity is confrrmed by the will of her father William Makepeace, written 16 November 1736, in which William bequeathed to his seven surviving daughters, including Remember, the remainder of his "Household Goods, Movables, Tools & personal Estate" not given away (MD 21: 140-411Bristol CoPR 8:479~80). On II December 1750, her brother-in-law Joseph Godfrey, husband of her sister Susannah, namedher as Remember Porter in his will (Bristol Co PR Abstracts 2:98/12:479-86). She rued, as Remember Porter, in Cornwallis Township, Nova Scotia, 9 August 1766 (Nova Scotia Twp Bks 76). She married before 1732, based on the birth of their first child, SAMUEL PORTER. He was possibly the son of the Samuel Porter of Hadley who bought land in Lebanon, Connecticut, 1.3April 1710 and 26 December 1718 (Lebanon CT LR McrFlm 2:243-44, 3:159). Either Samuel or his father was living in Lebanon by 22 August 1732 when Samuel Porter purchased acreage on two separate occasions (Lebanon CT LR McrFlm 4:450,450-51). In a deed drawn 3 March 1749/50 Samuel Porter of Lebanon and "Remember his wife which Remember was one of the Daughters of William Makepeace late of Taunton" sold a seventh part of a four-acre parcel of land in Taunton which had been given by William Makepeace, in his last will and testament, to his seven daughters (Bristol Co LR 35:592). Deeds by a Samuel Porter of Lebanon continue into the 19th century; there was more than one Samuel Porter of Lebanon (Lebanon CT LR McrFlm 6:403; 7:335, 343,448; 8:9,100,276; 9:399, 446; 10:407; 13:1.6; 14:94; 17:442; 18:118; 19:49,404). The Samuel Porter who had married Remember Makepeace had moved, with his family, to Cornwallis Township, Kings County, Nova Scotia, by 1761. He rued there 16 April 1761 (Nova Scotia Twp Bks 76). In his will, written 3 April 1761, Samuel Porter made bequests to his unnamed wife, to his son Elisha (who received his father's mare, two cows, a yearling bull, his spotted swine, and fifteen pounds "lawful Money of Connecticut") and his son Israel (who received two thirds of his father's land in Cornwallis), and to his daughters Abigail, Phebe, Sarah and Lydia. Lydia's sister Abigail was appointed her guardian. In the bequest to his wife, Samuel indicated that she should have the remainder of his property "for her Comfort and Support and Israel's," indicating that Israel was also a minor. Samuel's daughters Abigail and Phebe Porter were named executors (Hants Co NS PR 1:4). The Mayflower descendants in each succeeding generation are moving farther north, west and south, and often to areas where documentation is erratic. The records kept or located by members oftbeir families can add greatly to our storehouse of knowledge. The members of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants are among our most valued resources! THE MAYFLOWER QUARTERLY September 2014 Pages 169-171
