Biography

RESEARCH NOTE: 21Aug2022 Carl Wentworth (Wentworth-702) Beginning a family at age 56 is not biologically impossible, nor is fathering children in one's 70s. Both are known to have occurred. So the record should not be rejected just for that reason. The seven children attributed to son Ebenezer (1741-1813) (Wentworth, 1878) are completely different than those attributed to Ebenezer (1683-1760). The more interesting question about Ebenezer's marriage in 1735 is whether it is his first marriage. He was born in Rowley MA, north of Boston, and next is located in Norwich CT in 1741 at the birth of his second child Ebenezer (with Ann Haskins) when he was 58. His move from Rowley to Norwich could well have been associated with the similar move of his father Paul (~1655-1750) from Rowley to New London in 1707, when Ebenezer was 24. That would have Ebenezer in the New London area for 32 years before the birth of his first child Daniel (d. 1743) with Ann Haskins in 1739. The further puzzle is explaining Ebenezer's presence in Norwich CT to buy land in 1757 and his death in Hinsdale MA three years later, while all his children seem to have remained in CT, except perhaps his son Ebenezer, who was 16 in 1757 and also died in Hinsdale (1813). Apparently Ebenezer left his wife and family behind, including son Daniel (then 3). Although Daniel also ends up in Hinsdale, he is considered the Daniel who, at age 18, with nine other Wentworth men, enlisted in Asahel Smith’s militia company from Stoughton MA and marched on the Lexington alarm of April 19, 1775. It appears that someone raised Daniel (presumably his mother) in CT and that by 1775 he had moved to Stoughton, nearly in MA, where there were numerous Wentworth families.

RESEARCH NOTE: It is very likely that the wife and children attributed to this Ebenezer are actually those of his son, Ebenezer Jr., (Wentworth-1606) whose records are imperfect. He is clearly the wrong age to be starting a first family at the age of 53, with their births continuing until he is nearly 80. _____

Ebenezer (40. IV.), son of Paul and Catherine Wentworth, born 18 June 1683. He bought of Ephraim Kingsbury one acre of land on Middle Hill, then in Norwich, now in Franklin, Conn., 24 October 1743. He bough of John Gager, 25 January 1750/1, land adjoining the above. He was living in Mansfield, Conn., 13 April 1753. He bought land in Coventry, Conn., in 1757, and sold it soon after. He died about 1760, but at what place is unknown. His wife was Ann Haskin, of Norwich, Conn., whom he married 1 June 1735.

Son of Paul Wentworth and Katherine. His birth is recorded in Norwich CT, which indicates the family traveled there at some time and the children's names were recorded together. It does not indicate where he was born. The baptisms of all the children of Paul Wentworth are recorded in Rowley MA.

It is difficult to see how the family attributed to Ebenezer Wentworth3 was actually that of his son Ebenezer4, as suggested in the research note, although the age disparity noted for Ebelezer3's family is certainly troubling, though not impossible. John Wentworth (1878. v. 1, under fourth generation) presents considerable detail concerning Ebenezer4, son of Ebenezer3 and Ann Haskins. He (Ebenezer4) was b. 26 Jun 1741, m. 11 Nov 1762 Sarah French of Coventry CT, bought a farm there in 1774, and died in Hinsdale, MA, Mar 1813 at age 72. Sarah died there Mar 1827. They had 7 children: Sarah (died as an infant), Bildad, Mehitable, Sarah, Mary, Gad, and Ichabod in the period 1763-1776. It seems noteworthy that John Wentworth, a thorough and careful worker, accepted that age disparity and simply reported Ebenezer3's marriage and children without comment.

Wentworth-1606 and Wentworth-600 do not represent the same person because: These are probably father and son. They are not the same person. I think the marriage is to the younger one. More research is necessary. Merging this would just make the problem worse.

Wentworth-1606 and Wentworth-600 do not represent the same person because: Wrong generation. I suspect 1606 is is the son of 600. I find it outside of probability that a man in his 60s would be starting a large family with a woman almost 40 years younger than he was.

Agree! My suspicion is that the completely unsourced one is just a "wild guess" on the birth date. But fine with the rejection - thanks for looking at it.
