Biography

John (Sutherland) Sutherland Ninth Earl of Sutherland is a member of Clan Sutherland.

John Sutherland (d.1514) was the 9th Earl of Sutherland and chief of Clan Sutherland. He was the son of John Sutherland and his first wife Margaret MacDonald.[1] He was probably born c. 1480.

He appears to have suffered from a similar or the same mental issue as his father. According to the family historian, Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun, John Sutherland was weak of judgement, deprived of natural wit and unable to govern himself or others. Balfour Paul notices the same issue. John succeeded in the year 1508, and was retoured heir to his father on 24 July 1509, but did not complete his title in the usual form. His half-brother, Alexander, had grounds to oppose.[2] John was considered a ward of the Grown, and the Sutherland estates were administered by the High Treasurer, then Andrew Stewart, Bishop of Caithness.

In 1514 steps were taken to pronounce him legally incapable of managing his affairs. A commission was issued to certain noblemen to act as sheriffs, and to summon a jury to meet at Perth, to be free from local influences. The Earl himself was present, and before the proceedings were closed he was asked as to his succession.

On 13 June 1514, he declared that his sister Elizabeth, her husband Adam Gordon, and their children, were his nearest heirs, and he also entered into what was in law a voluntary interdiction of himself from making improper settlements or conveyances of his estate.[3]

John Sutherland, 9th Earl, died, before end of Jul 1514 without marrying and left no children. His date of death and burial place are not found in source.
