Jonah was born in 1763 to Submit Gleazen.[1][2][3]
He was baptized under Gleason in 1764.[4]
He married Mary Hoit in 1789. His marriage record states that he was a Junior.[5]
Jonah and Molly Rice family
Jonah Rice was in Otisco, NY in both 1820 and 1830 Censuses, and his son Luther Rice was born there c. 1815... so they came from Mass. after 1810...[6]
Jonah Rice, Senior, died in 1827, Marlborough, Mass., published vital records: p. 385, Rice, Jonah, June 12, 1827, in his 85th year.
LF says: when I first added this tree to wiki, I must have left out his father as they had the same first name... a cousin of this line asked me a question, which led to me realizing this as I saw a generation gap of 60 years, so now I will add the missing generation... done today 1-14-14... also have added the apparently controversial Submit Gleason and her ancestral lines, and in the work of adding these, discovered again that these become cousins as co-descendants of the Hoyt-Godfrey-Cox families in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, who are also on my father's ancestry.
(LF says, its possible, but also probably more likely that his father was in the Rev War, or that they both were and could be confused, having the same first and last name... the father would have been in his 30s when the war began, the son would have been 13 in 1776...)
Jonah Rice may have been a Revolutionary soldier. He was bom 7 Oct. 1763 at Marlboro, Mass.. married Molly (Mary) Hoyt on April 8,1789, and was in Ashburnham. Mass. in 1790. Molly was born May 28, 1773 and was of the seventh genera- tion of Hoyts in America. Jonah • and Molly were the parents of eleven children, several of whose descendants are still living in the Town of Otisco. Roy Riggall, Anna Weeks. Lloyd Rice's children, Nancy Simmons, and Ron Rice and children, to name some. Two of their sons had operated a sawmill at the foot of Rice's Hill. Molly died on Nov. 22, 1858, and Jonah, at age 70, on June 16. 1883. They had come to Otisco in 1818.
The old published History of Marlborough (published in 1862) includes a genealogical table of many of the early families, including my Fays, and the Gleasons and the Rices. Of course, I looked to see if there was anything about our Jonah Rice Jr., but did not see anything there. In the 1800s, who would put info about an out of wedlock birth into print?
They knew such things happened, but they didn't put them into print, except for in the Scarlet Letter, as a very dramatic effect in literature. Both Submit Gleason and Jonah Rice (Sr.) are listed in their separate family genealogies, but nothing is shown to connect them in any way. I did note that Jonah's marriage and family list begin after Jonah Junior was born; and that there is no mention of an earlier marriage or birth in the history book. This does not necessarily disprove whatever happened in real life, it just shows that history is often written as people may want it to be written, to keep their lives and their world as they wish it to be. - LF.

Jonah maybe was born out of wedlock, as the saying goes, but it may have been made good by his either natural or adoptive parents... we might dream of a romantic ending, of father loving his wife and her son, making them all family in life. What is more family than that?? - LF.
