Biography

"In 1773, Michael Davis, and old hunter, came from Concord, Mass., and took up a lot on a ridge of land three miles from any settlers. He lived a solitary life until James Smith, Nathan Hancock, John Gross, Joshua Gross and Andrew Craige took up settlers’ lots near him, which were run out in 1780. Except Jas. Smith, these where sons of the first settlers in the plantation."[1]

The Nathan Hancock is the son of John Hancock and Mary Walker. The Joshua Gross is the son of Orland founder Joseph Gross and Tabitha Goodell. So this means that James Smith was an original settler and not born in Orland. So, the James Smith referred to here is the wife of Mary Hancock Smith. Mary's father, John Hancock, explicitly mentions her as Mary Smith in his will of 1819.

James was born in 1759 to Josiah Smith and second wife Elizabeth Robinson. (reference in book by Anson Wheeler and collated with Legacy Source.

When that move occurs could have happened after James birth. p. 572
