Biography

Moses married Edith Lavinia “Edy” Hobson about 1795, probably in Montgomery County, North Carolina, though this is not proven, due to record loss in that county. We do know that the father of Moses, David Burleson Sr, was living in Montgomery County in 1790 and 1800 and the father of Edy, Mourning Hobson, was there in 1800.

By 1810, many of the Burlesons, including Moses and Edy, had moved on to Rutherford County, Tennessee. In 1816 he appeared as Ensign of the 22nd Regiment of Tennessee Militia, along with Isaac Burleson, a Lieutenant.

In 1820, Moses gave marriage consent for his son Michael in Blount County, Alabama. In 1824 and 1826 he gave consent for other children to marry in Jefferson County, Alabama and also purchased land there.

David Burleson Sr named his son, Moses, in his 1828 will in Rutherford County, Tennessee.

The 1830 census listed Moses and wife with four children and eight slaves. He and son-in-law Ralph Mason witnessed a deed in that county in 1832.

There is a Find-A-Grave entry #95229034 giving his death date as 27 Mar 1836 in Marion County, Alabama, but no source for that information.

DNA

  • Paternal and Maternal relationships are both confident based on a triangulated group on MyHeritageDNA who share a 13 cM segment on chromosome 14, consisting of Jana (Denton) Trent and Barb (Nelson) Monk, her 4th cousin, and Laurance Lynch, her 5th cousin 1x removed. (Barb and LDL are 5th cousins 1x removed.) These matches have been independently verified by via the MyHeritage Chromosome Browser. Their most-recent common ancestors are David Burleson and Ursula Weatherford, the 4x great grandparents of both Jana (Denton) Trent and Barb (Nelson) Monk and 5x great grandparents of Laurance Lynch.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Moses by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Moses:
