Note N121! By 1830 his family had moved from Morgan Co., TN to Pulaski, Co., AR and they were in Van Buren Co., AR by 1840. That is where his mother died in 1842. when Sam was 13 his father brought him to Nacogdoches TYerritory in the newly formed State of Texas. Ther came with several of his uncles, his grandmother - Sallie Bunch Daugherty, and his brothers & sisters. In 1846 the area where they were living was made Cherokee County & by 1850 Sam, his father, his uncles & brothers had applied for land through Jon Fenton Mercer's Colony.

Moved from Arkansas to Texas at age of 12 yrs. Lived for a time in Cherokee

County, returned to Kaufman Co in the late 1850's

 ! Served as Bugler and First Sergeant with the Mustang Cavalry;, 13th Brigade,

Texas State Troops, CSA.
