Biography

Esther Rankin was born in 1791 in Maine, the seventh of the nine children of Constant Rankin and Mary Tolman. Esther first married Israel Garner, 1789-1812, on 7 November 1811 in Thomaston, Maine. They had a son, William Andrew Gardner, 1812-1898. Israel was lost at sea a few months after their son was born. Esther married Joseph Walker, 1795-1874, on 24 September 1817 in Albion, Kennebec, Maine. In 1850, they lived on their farm with their children and one hired farm laborer, and one presumed grandchild, in Aroostook, Maine. Their sons were all laborers on the farm, which was valued at $500. ^[3]

In 1870, they lived with their daughter, Abigail Buter, her husband, their three children, and George M. Allen, aged 7. ^[4]

Esther Rankin Gardner Walker, 1791-1876, was born and died in Rockland, Knox, Maine. She was buried at Garner Memorial Cemetery, Ashland, Maine, with her first husband, Israel Gardner, and their son William Andrew Gardner; and her second husband, Joseph Walker. ^{[5] [6]}
