Biography

George Harris[1] Franklin, son of Howell Franklin and Mary Womack,[2] was born 24 Dec 1867[3] in Texas.[4][5][6][7]

  3. George Franklin was born on 13 Dec 1902[11] in Leon County, Texas,[12][13][4] died on 12 Jul 1968 at Bryan, Brazos County, Texas and was buried in Willowhole Cemetery.[11]

  6. A daughter Franklin was born 02 Jan 1919 in Madison County, Texas.[19]

George died 25 Dec 1940 in Normangee, Madison County, Texas and was buried in Hopewell Cemetery in Normangee.[3][20][1]

On George Harris Franklin’s death certificate, it says his father’s name was Harris Franklin. That was a mistake. I have verified that his father’s name was Howard “Howell” Franklin. His father, Howell, died before the 1870 census, when George was a little less than two years old. Then, in 1875, George’s mother, Mary Ann Womack (Franklin), married her former brother-in-law, Dr. James T. Hill. Dr. Hill had been married to Mary Ann’s younger sister, Sarah “Jane” Womack, who died soon after giving birth to a baby girl.
After George’s mother and Dr. Hill married, they moved to Iola, Texas, where Dr. Hill practiced medicine, and together, he and Mary Ann raised all off the children — his, hers, and two more they had after they married. The story isn’t complete yet: Before Jane and Dr. Hill married, Jane was married to Dr. George Wallace. They has two daughters (perhaps three) that died. They had one son, Brink Wallace, who would have been a stepson of Dr. Hill and a nephew of Mary Ann, and they raised Brink also.
Due to this history, I am not surprised that the name of George’s birth father was a mistake on his death certificate. At the time of his death, I suspect they could not remember the name was Howell.
My great grandfather's name was Howell Franklin according to family records and other reliable documents. On my WikiTree and FamilySearch. org tree, I have listed Howard Alvin "Howell" Franklin, son of Ralph Franklin, and grandson of Thomas B. Franklin, as the Howell that married my great grandmother, Mary Ann Womack, and became my great grandfather, although I do not yet have proof that he is the correct Howell Franklin. I do have information that leads me to believe he is the correct Howell, but I am still working to tie learn my Franklin lineage. My Y-DNA25 report shows matches with Franklins that are related to Ralph and Thomas B. Franklin, so I know I am on the right track. [21]
