Gideon Pendleton was born at Westerly, Rhode Island, 11 Dec 1751, the son of Thomas Pendleton and Dorcas Dodge; [1] [2] [3] died at Deer Island, New Brunswick, Apr 1847; [4] married (1) c1778, Eunice Getchell, her parents not identified; [5] married (2) c1783, Matilda Gilkey, daughter of John Gilkey and Sylvina Thomas. [6]
From The History of Islesborough: [7]
Gideon, son of Thomas Pendleton, Sen., married Matilda Gilkey, daughter of Capt. John Gilkey, and settled on (700) Acre Island. His house was on the same spot where Hiram Dodge lived. He was the first man from Islesborough to command a vessel sailing to the West Indies, and on his return had his vessel seized by the Collector, Joseph Hook, of Castine, for smuggling two pounds of tea. He sold land in Islesborough, May 4, 1794. In 1814, he moved to New Brunswick, where he bought a large island near Saint Andrews, now called Pendleton Island. He died there at the age of nearly 90.
From The Pendleton Genealogy: [8]
He was among the early settlers of Islesboro, Me., and lived there until he was between forty and fifty years old. He was a master mariner and was the first man from Islesboro to command a vessel sailing to the West Indies. On the return from one of his voyages he brought home two pounds of tea, a great luxury at that time, and as he neglected to declare the goods he came into collision with the U.S. Customs Collector at Castine (Hist. of Isles., p. 251). Tradition says that the government's action in this matter seemed so petty to Capt. Pendleton that he decided to remove to New Brunswick, where his brother Stephen had already settled. However that may be, Gideon and his wife, Matilda, sold Lot 7 with dwelling house thereon to John Pendleton, 4 May 1791, (Hancock Co. Deeds 1:219); some years afterwards he removed with his family to Deer Island, where the rest of his long life was spent. His descendants are very numerous and furnished more soldiers to the Union army in the Civil War than those of any other Pendleton of his generation. He left no will.
By Eunice Getchell he had several children, but we are uncertain if we have all their names. He married, later, Matilda Gilkey, daughter of John and Sylvina (Thomas) Gilkey. She died February 1855. John Gilkey's will, dated 25 September 1816 (Hancock Co., Me., Prob. Rec. vi, 430), refers to daughter, Matilda Pendleton.
From Early New England Pendletons: [9]
The parentage of his first consort, Eunice Getchell, has not been determined. She may have been the daughter of Nathaniel "Gatchell" of Islesboro, who was listed in the U.S. Census of that town in 1790. There was, however, a James "Gatchell" living on the mainland nearby who was also listed in that Census. The Hancock County, Maine, Probate records do not show any wills or administrations under these names.
Issue by Eunice Getchell, order uncertain: [10] [11]
Issue by Matilda Gilky, born at Islesborough, Me., and Deer Island, N.B.: [12] [13] [14]
Loyalist records show that Gideon received a grant on Deer Island. However, he did not receive the land, since there are petitions of 1805 and 1812 in which he requests land. Gideon later resided on the western side of Deer Island, on a headland now called Davidson Head, where he died, cApr 1842, aged 90y. [15] Gideon's wife, Matilda, was the daughter of Sylvina Thomas and John Gilkey of Islesboro, Maine. [16]
Living at Islesboro, Maine, in 1790. [17]
