Biography

Sussex (historic flag, adopted 2011)
William Culpepper Bt was born in Ardingly, Sussex, England.

William Colepeper was son of Edward Colepeper [1] and his wife, Elizabeth (Farnfold) Colepepper (-1633).[2][3]

Baptism:William was baptised on 4 Jul 1602 at the Church of St Peter, Ardingly, Sussex, England[1][4].

Occupation: William was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1623.[3]

Baronet: William was made a Baronet on 20 September 1628.[3][5]

MarriageThere are differences over the marriage records of William Culpeper to jane Pellat. The Sussex Marriage Index[6] and the Sussex Parish Registers[7] states the marriage took place on 13 Jul 1626. The book 'A History of the County of Sussex: Volume 7 states 1628'.[8].

Parliament: William became MP for East Grinstead in 1640.[5][8]

Death: Cokayne [3] states that his death was 'about 1651. However, there are good records of his burial (see below) which are for 1678 (see below).

Burial:William was buried at the Church of St. Peter, Ardingly, Sussex, England on 6th Dec 1678[9][10]

Wakehurst Place

A brief history of the Culpeper family, the Manor of Wakehurst, and the Church of St Peter is provided in British History Online Parishes Ardingly[5].

Research Notes

The visitations [2] states that William had a son William who inherited the baronetcy. No reference could be found to William as the son of William in the records of births whereas all the other children of William and jane were baptised and are recorded in the Sussex Parish records. It therefore seems probable that the William recorded as the son of this William in the visitations was in-fact the son of Benjamin not William. This is because Benjamin pre-deceased his father and his son William inherited the estate and the baronetcy in 1678 directly from his Grandfather[5]. The fact that he inherited the estate directly from his grandfather may have lead to this being recorded by the chroniclers as him being the son rather then the grandson of William .

Cokayne was found to be inaccurate and unrelaible in relation to the Colepeper's of Wakehurst.[3] It is recommended that the priamary sources referenced in this profile and that of Wiliam's ancestors and decendants be referenced rather than Cokayne, who has conflated this branch of the Colepepers with a different branch and caused confusion.

The History of Parliament website does not currently hold records for the years 1640 - 1660 and there is no reference to William Culpeper[11].

The Complete Peerage Vol 2 Bra to C [12] was observed to contain no records of the Baronetcy of Culpeper of Wakehurst, Sussex (i.e, this branch of the family tree).

The manorial records for Ardingley are register for Wakehurst Manor. There is a record book identified in The National Archive referring to the Court Book for Wakehurst Place dated between 1633 and 1821 which is held at the West Susses Records Office[13]. A visit to the WSRO to consult that document would benefit this profile.

The website 'Our Royal, Titled, Noble, and Commoner Ancestors & Cousins' [14] contains no records of the Baronetcy of Culpeper of Wakehurst, Sussex (i.e, this branch of the family tree).

Colepeper-70 and Culpepper-286 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same ame, the same children and the same date of burial
