Research Notes

WikiTree+ DataDoctor suggests Caleb Howe and Jemima Sawtelle may be William's parents based on their relationship on FindAGrave. However, little evidence exists to suggest that the William Howe who lived in Kingston was Caleb and Jemima's son. A history of the Howe family suggests Caleb and Jemima's son settled in Nova Scotia. This may not be the William Howe who came to Annapolis, Nova Scotia in 1782 since there is an entry for William, child of William Howe and Margareth, baptized on October 18, 1783 at the Lutheran church in New York City. It is unlikely that someone loyal to the Crown would return to New York City so soon after the formal end of hostilities. There is a family of William Howe who is listed in the list of refugees from New York for December 1783 in Sorell [Sorel] and Yamaksa in Quebec found in the Haldimand Papers, B-166, p 161 (LAC microfilm H-1654, image 782) and B-167, p 353 (LAC microfilm H-1655, image 39). This might be the family who settled in the now Kingston area of Ontario.

Howe-3837 and Howe-2348 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these may be the same William Howe. The place of birth, New York State vs. Vermont, is the main difference. There are detailed early sources for the Vermont William Howe with little known after his move to Nova Scotia.

Howe-3837 and Howe-2348 do not represent the same person because: Different birth place, different death place, not enough information

I still believe a merge is in order here. The death place of Nova Scotia was not backed up by any sources except that he had moved there.
