In 1808 he removed to New York State, died in 1827, and is buried in Penn Yan. There is no record that any of his 10 children remained in Sandgate.

Elijah served as Selectman, Lister, Tything man, Fence Viewer, and Highway Surveyor. He died in 1835 at the age of 80 years and is buried in Sandgate Center Cemetery. His youngest son, Elijah, Jr., became Dr. Elijah Hurd and served the townspeople many years, until his death in 1884.[1]
