Wayne lived for a time with his Great Aunt, Pernina Hensley Bromley, who had no children at the time. He first came to Arkansas when he was 15 years old, with a relative who Homesteaded land in the Bryan community, now belonging to David and Rita Ratchford. The relative offered to give him the land if he would stay on it, but he refused, saying that he would rather make it on his on.

He returned to Arkansas to stay in 1886,working at times for the McBrides, Arnolds, Hodges and Bromleys, who were all distant relatives. He later bought the Bromley Store, and home on West Main St. in Marshall. The home burned about 1923,and he re-built, living there until his death. He made his half-brother, John Blackwell, a partner in the store, which they operated until 1944 as Hensley Brothers. He also farmed and ran a store on upper Bear Creek for several years.
