Vicki Pulitano, First Communion |
Victoria (Vittoria) Pulitano was born on 15 Apr 1914 in Bovalino, Reggio di Calabria, Calabria, Italy[1]. She was the daughter of Italian immigrants Vincent (Vincenzo) Pulitano and Celeste (Celestina) Anastasi. Her parents had immigrated to Massachusetts, USA prior to her birth where they met and married. However, they returned for short time while her mother was pregnant. Victoria arrived in the United States with her mother when she was 6 weeks old[2]. The rumour she was born aboard the ship in transit in either directions have not been proven. Her birth was recorded in Bovalino, Italy[1], the home of her father.
Victoria's daughter wrote about her birth[3]: Vincent Pulitano and Celestina Anastasi married in East Boston, Massachusetts. Carl was born. They returned to Italy in either 1913 or 1914 expecting my mother Victoria. Returned to East Boston, MA when Victoria was 45-47 days old - end of May 1914.
Passenger records confirm this timeline of arrival with her mother and older brother Carl aboard the Moltke at New York, New York, USA on 26 May 1914. The ship departed Naples on 13 May 1914, a month after her birth[2].
Carl and Vicki Pulitano |
Vicki married James Yates in Boston, Massachusetts on 7 Mar 1940[4]. Vicki's first husband perished aboard the USS Sims in the Battle of the Coral Sea on 7 May 1942[5] while she was still pregnant with their second son. She left her two young sons to be raised by their grandparents on their farm in rural Illinois.
Vicki married secondly Clifton George McBride on 24 Jun 1949 in Los Angeles, California, USA[6]. A couple years later, Victoria left with their daughter and returned to Boston where she raised her daughter as a single mother. They divorced in 1952.
George and Vicki were married twice. The first marriage happened before George's divorce from his first wife was final. Her daughter described her parents' marriage in her personal notes.[3]
My parents' marriage was the second for both. My father's first divorce was not final when he married my mother. So they married again after I was born. I found two marriage certificates one time and asked mom about it.
Between her marriages, Vicki gave birth to a daughter Jean whom she gave up for adoption to a close friend. The identity of her biological father is unknown, but was said by Victoria's youngest daughter (Jean's half-sister) to be a Methodist minister from Texas, [3] but this has never been substantiated and may be totally inaccurate. Vicki also mentioned having given up another son for adoption[3] , but no further information is known about this baby.
Victoria died on 22 Oct 1991[7][8] and was buried (as wife of James Yates) at Bourne National Cemetery[9], Bourne, Massachusetts, USA.
