Caution

Numerous genealogies show an Elizabeth Courtenay, daughter of Henry Courteney and Gertrude Blount, as the wife of David Ashels. Henry Courteney was at one time, before his execution, one of the most powerful men of England, and, one can assume, his children were relatively well documented. There is no Elizabeth among them.

Since Henry was executed 9 December 1538, Elizabeth would need to have been conceived while he was a prisoner and born after his death.

Biography

Birth

Some claim that Elizabeth was born 1539 in Middlesex, England. [1]

Parentage

Some genealogies claim she was the daughter Sir Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess of Exeter and Gertrude Blount, and therefore sister of Edward Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon and Henry Courteney (see Caution, above)[1]

Marriage

Some claim that she married David Ashels[citation needed] and was the mother of Mary Ashels[citation needed] who married Parker [1]

Death

Some claim that Elizabeth died 1570 in Middlesex, England[1]

In 1538 Sir Henry Courteney was incarcerated along with his wife and son. Being the kings cousin and close confidant, they would be given an apartment in the Tower of London. After he was executed his wife was attainted, therefore disgraced so any child she would have would be fatherless,of no value, and not be mentioned. Also Elizabeth would be hidden from the king. Therefore Elizabeth could very well be their daughter, just one that would be undocumented. I feel that the numerous genealogies should be upheld and the Courteney family be reunited.

Sir Henry Courteney and his wife Gertrude Blount had two children only, both sons. They did not have a daughter Elizabeth who married David Ashel, so I have disconnected Elizabeth from these parents. If credible data show up which confirm the connection, they can always be reconnected as parents!

Elizabeth's LNAB probably should be "Unknown". However, at this point we know so little about David and Elizabeth, that it would probably be better to wait for research so that we know a little bit more about them, and that might influence what her best LNAB is.
