Biography

Names

Anne Gray, Anne Cooley, Anne/Anna[1][2][3][4]

Abt. 1760 Birth

Anna b. abt. 1760 d/o Joseph Gray.[1]

1803 KY and TN Life

On 18 Nov 1803, Joseph Gray of Washington County, Kentucky sells "negroe Girl Slave named Betty" to Anne Cooley, wife of William Cooley of the same county:[1]

Knew all men by these presents that I Joseph Gray of Washington County State of Kentucky for and in consideration of divers valuable Services rendered & performed for me by Anne Cooley wife of William Cooley of the County aforesaid and for the further consideration of five shillings current money of the State aforesaid to me in hand paid by the said Anne Cooley the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge Have Granted Bargained and Sold and by these presents do give Grant bargain sell and deliver unto her the said Anne Cooley and her heirs forever a certain negroe Girl Slave named Betty and her future increase and I do hereby Warrant and defend the Said Negro Girl Betty and her future increase unto the said Anne Cooley her heirs and assigns forever free from the claim or demand of all and every person or persons Whatsoever & Free and Clear from all incumbrances of any Kind Whatsoever In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and affixed my seal this 18th day of November 1803. Joseph Gray seal.[5]

In 1812, Joseph Gray, now of Stewart County, Tennessee wills his Rolling Fork, Washington County, KY land to son Joseph Gray Jr: "...gets land in Washington Co., KY on the Rolling Fork of the Salt River, and gets part of land shared with Peter R Booker (originally granted to Joseph Gray Sr and his brother James Gray)." Earlier that year he gifts land in Stewart County to Joel Cooley, son of William M Cooley. The fact that Anne's son receives land from Joseph provides further proof that Anne is the daughter of Joseph Gray.[1]

On 28 Sep 1825, Anna received a land grant of 89 acres in Stewart Co., TN on Dyers Creek surveyed that date.[6] (Book 1, Page 230) Grants South of Walker's Line "A small group of grants consisting of eight books known as the Grants South of Walker's Line?were issued from 1825 to 1923 and consist of 4,583 separate grants. They are located, as their title suggests, 'South of Walker's Line,' and north of the parallel 36 degrees and 30 minutes, a line which was accurately established in 1819 by Robert Alexander and Luke Munsell, following legislative appointment. Dr. Walker in running his line for the southern boundary of Kentucky in 1779-80 failed to establish the true parallel of 36 degrees and 30 minutes, his line falling variously from six to ten miles north of the true parallel. Since the old Walker line had been established as the southern boundary of Kentucky and covers a considerable distance, it will be seen that the lands indicated in these grants were really in Tennessee. To settle the matter an agreement was reached in 1820 by the Commissioners selected by the states of Kentucky and Tennessee, in furtherance of which Kentucky was given the right to issue grants for all of the territory lying north of parallel 36 degrees and 30 minutes and east of the Tennessee River. The surveys in this system are not recorded, but are found in file boxes in the Land Office." (Excerpts from "The Kentucky Land Grants: A Systematic Index to All of the Land Grants Recorded in the State Land Office at Frankfort, Kentucky, 1782-1924," by Willard Rouse Jillson, 1971)[4]

On Aug 1826, in the State of Tennessee, Anne received some of her husband's lands after his death:[4]

We the Commissioners whose names are undersigned have met according to authority on the lands of William M. Cooley Deceased to lay off the Dower of Widow Ann Cooley agreeable to an order of Court directed to in and we the Commisssioners saeth that the one third laid off for Mrs. Cooley is to begin at the North east Corner of the tract of land whereon she now lives which William M. Thence north one hundred one hundred and six and two thirds poles. Thence one hundred and fifty four poles to the the Beginning including the dwelling house.
