"Herman S. Cushing, 89, of 24Jackson Park, Gardner, assistant city engineer of Fitchburg until his retirement, died Friday night in Burbank Hospital.

He served the city as assistant engineer for 49 uears before moving to Gardner.

He was born in Fitchburg, son of the late Sewell G. and Ellen A. (Sampson) Cushing. His wife was the late Florence (Buckley) Cushing.

A self-educated engineer, he began his career as an apprentice in the office of a local civil engineer in 1897 after quitting high school in his sophomore year.

One of the jobs he worked on was the design of the Fitchburg Leominster & Suburban Railway. The tracks of the line were buried almost 20 years ago when Fitchburg became one of the first cities to use a trackless trolley.

Mr. Cushing was a member of the Rollstone Congregational Church andonce directed the Fitchburg Choral Society.

He leaves a son, Richard W. Cushing of Gardner, with whom he made his home; a daughter, Stella, wife of Richard H. Lawrence of Fitchburg; another son, Dana, a retired captain in the U.S. Navy, died several years ago, sister, Mrs. Elmer C. Reed of Belmont, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday a 2 p.m. in the Bosk Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery." Wor. Tel. 3/3/1968.
