Biography

Daniel Burt was born in 1716, He is the son of Benjamin Burt and Sarah Belden. He passed away in 1805.

From History of Orange County, New York, Pgs. 567, 568:

In 1746, Daniel Burt, the father of Hon. James Burt, came from Connecticut and located upon the farm owned in later years by Thomas and Edward L. Welling. There he remained in the depths of the forest for four years, when his relatives came from Connecticut, and after a long and tedious search found him buried in the wild woods. They assured him he could never get along in such a new country, and persuaded him to return with them, which he did. He sold out to Thomas Welling, the grand- father of Thomas and Edward L. Welling, and moved back to Connecticut. There he was not satisfied to remain, returned in 1760, and made an effort to re-purchase his old farm of Mr. Welling ; but in consequence of a disagreement about the price of a horse, which was to be a part of the consideration, the bargain fell through, and Burt purchased at Bellvale, on Long-House Creek. This was a valuable property, as it contained a fine water-power, upon which he erected a flourand saw mill. The mill was overshot, there being 30 feet fall in 30 rods. Extensive milling and other mechanical works have continued to be conducted there. This location Daniel Burt exchanged for a farm near the village of Warwick, the one now owned by his grandson, James Burt. On the Welling farm there was an Indian settlement called Miscotucky. They had an orchard of apple- trees, some of which were standing in a meadow down to a comparatively modern period.

Mrs. Daniel Burt died Jan. 10, 1810, aged ninety- four years. At her death she had several hundred descendants.

In the year 1746, Daniel Burt came from Ridgefield, Conn., and settled upon a farm near the village of Warwick. He soon returned to Connecticut, probably three or four weeks later, where he remained until 1760, when returning to Warwick, and failing to secure his old farm, he located at Bellvale, N. Y.

When he came from Connecticut in 1760, Daniel Whitney, who married his sister, Thankful Burt, came with him to Warwick and settled.

at the close of the same year Mr. Burt again purchased a farm near Warwick, to which he moved, and on which he resided until his death.

At the organization of the First Baptist Church at Warwick, in 1765, we find the names of his wife, Hannah Burt, Daniel Whitney, and Thankful (Burt) Whitney. The list of members in 1789 is headed with the name of Daniel Burt, Sr.

Mrs. Burt was the daughter of Dea. James Benedict of Ridgefield. At her death she had 524 descendants.

Daniel Sayer died Nov. Nov. 26, 1823. Gideon Scott died March 28, 1826.

A daughter of Edy and Ruth Newbury married a man by the name of Whitney, and in the fall of 1875 she was still living at the age of 102 years, in Schuyler Co., N. Y.
