Biography

Thomas was born about 1686. He was the son of Daniel Clarke and Ruth Barber. Thomas Clark was "....the progenitor of the Clark family of Galloway Twp., Atlantic Co., was Thomas Clark Sr. (ca. 1689-1752), who is thought to have come from Connecticut to Egg Harbour, Burlington Co., by 1718. Thomas died intestate on 17 May 1752, leaving at least three sons: Thomas, David and Elijah. He is buried beside his wife Ruth at Clark's Landing, overlooking the Mullica River. The sons Thomas Jr. (ca. 1722-1793) and David (d. 1803) purchased several tracts of land, jointly, in Great Egg Harbour Twp., Gloucester County (later Galloway Twp., Atlantic Co.). Thomas Jr. died 31 October 1793, aged 71; he is buried beside his wife Sarah (Parker) at Clark's Mills, now Port Republic, Atlantic Co. Thomas Jr.'s three sons, Reuben, Adrial, and Parker, served as privates in the Gloucester County Militia during the Revolutionary War. Reuben (born ca. 1754) inherited his father's homestead plantation amounting to about 1,500 acres. He received a state military pension in 1837, and is listed on the 1840 census of pensioners in Galloway Twp.,[1], aged 86. He was apparently the same Reuben Clark who married in 1811, Olive (-?-), and had by her four children" [2] See: Clark Family Papers. note: Atlantic County was part of Gloucester county before 1776.

Marriages

His first wife was Hannah ( maiden name unknown) who was the mother of all his children.

He was married secondly to Ruth Hudson/Hutton/Huttom later in life. No issue from this second marriage. [3][4].

Legacy

Thomas Clark's family were early settlers as witnessed by the names of nearby locations of "Clarktown", near Mays Landing, and "Clarks Landing", on the Mullica River, near Egg Harbor City. The Presbyterians met at Clark's Mills Meeting House, built by Thomas Clark about 1762.

Burial

"He is buried beside his second wife, Ruth, at Clark's Landing" [5][6][7]

The site is marked by the old Burying Ground or Churchyard, at what was known as Clark's Mills, now a part of Port Republic. On the river bank, at the site of the Clark Plantation, in Clarks Landing are two headstone: "Here lyes the body of Mr. Thomas Clark who died May 17, A. D. 1752 in the 65 year of his age." "Here lyes the body of Mrs. Ruth Clark wife of Mr Thomas Clark who died June 2nd 1749 in the 53rd year of her age."
