Biography

Josie Bates was enumerated at Gatesville Post Office, Coryell County, Texas for the September 11, United States Census, 1870. She was noted as born 1869-1870 in Texas and being born in January as seen in this image of the original census. Also included in the household are male John Bates, female Martha Bates, female Belle Bates, female Ina Bates, female Lizzie Bates and female Mary Scuddy.^[1]

Josephine Kennedy was enumerated as sister of the head of household at 930 14th Street, Precinct 4 Denver city Ward 2, Arapahoe County, Colorado for the June 5, United States Census, 1900. She was noted as born January 1870 in Texas and had been married for thirteen years. She was the mother of two children of which both were still living. Also included in the household are seventeen roomers and two servants as well as head Ina Rhoads, daughter Lucille Rhoads, son Douglas C Rhoads, nephew Peel? Kennedy and roomer Charles H Fenton as seen in an image of the original census.^[2]

Josephine Bates Kennedy wed Thomas Jones Freeman October 20, 1904 in Austin, Travis County, Texas.^[3]

Josephine Freeman was enumerated as wife of the head of household at Main (Street?), Houston Ward 4, Harris County, Texas for the April 22, United States Census, 1910. She was noted as born 1870 in Texas and had been married six years (This was noted as a second marriage). She was the mother of two children of which both were still living as seen in the image of the original census. Also included in the household are head Thomas J Freeman and mother-in-law Mary Bates.^[4]

Josephine Bates was listed as the mother of James Peeler Kennedy who died October 4, 1918 in Alpine, Brewster County, Texas. The father was listed as Mathew Rankin Kennedy.^[5]
